Bob Bell: Photographically, nature is my first love. Almost any subject can spark my interest, but most of my photography does turn out to be images from nature. I've always felt an extremely strong connection to nature. I can't really explain why, or even when it first developed. Maybe it dates back to my childhood in Moose Jaw in the Canadian prairies. As kids, we played for countless hours along a creek that passed within 200 yards of our house. We'd follow the creek as it flowed through our neighborhood and into Crescent Park. Floating sticks in it, making “spears” from the taller weed stems. There was a "gorilla tree" in the park too--a small cedar I think, shaped somewhat like a gorilla. We gave it a wide berth when the light was fading. And there were the “clay hills” on the north-east corner of town, and the “bicycle hills” across the road, bordering the creek. Hours & hours of running, climbing, digging, exploring. If much of our character and interests are formed in our early years, then I consider myself very lucky to have grown up where I could discover the world of nature so close to home.
